The short form IIT stands for Indian Institute of Technology which is a supreme engineering institute in India. As of now, there are 23 IITs that have been established and are under the authority of the Institute of Technology Act, 1961.
IIT offers various graduate, post-graduate and doctoral programs in the field of engineering. Some of the popular programs offered by the IITs are mechanical engineering, civil engineering, architecture and planning, electronic engineering, computer science, etc.
Because IIT is a renowned engineering school in India, it has a rigorous selection procedure for its undergraduate programs. It consists of clearing one of the hardest exams in the world, i.e., JEE conducted annually by the National Testing Agency. To appear for JEE, applicants must score a minimum of 75% in grade 12.
For post-graduate programs, Master of Technology or MTech, applicants will have to appear for the GATE examination. IITs also offer postgraduate courses like MTech, Masters in Business Management, and MSc in various domains. For MBA, applicants will have to appear for CAT whereas for MSc., applicants will have to sit for JAM. It should be noted that JAM is conducted in 7 different subjects and is widely accepted by other institutions as well.
Undergraduate
IITs offer various kinds of courses for applicants interested in pursuing graduation. The programs offered by IIT at the undergraduate level are B. Tech, B.Arch., B.Sc., etc.
The dual degree is also offered by IIT, which offers integrated programs along with a Ph.D.
B. Tech and B.Arch. are the most popular courses offered by IIT and last for 4 years, whereas B.Arch. lasts for 5 years. The exams accepted by both are JEE mains and JEE advanced.
Postgraduate
IITs also offer various kinds of post-graduation courses for applicants interested in pursuing post-graduation. The programs offered by IIT at the postgraduate level are MSc., Integrated program or dual degree of MSc. and Ph.D., MTECH, and MPhil.
Admission Criteria
Applicants who wish to appear for the UG courses at IITs must have obtained an average of a minimum of 75% in grade 12 with the PCM stream. It is to be noted that IIT provides relaxation for reserved categories.
For general category graduates who wish to pursue PG courses, a GPA of at least 6.5 is required. Candidates from SC/ST and OBC are given a relaxation.
The applicants who wish to pursue Ph.D. programs must have obtained a minimum of 60%/ 6.5 CGPA in their post-graduation whereas some relaxation is provided to SC/ST candidates.
The Admission Process At IIT For Undergraduate Courses
Candidates who wish to pursue UG courses like B. Tech and B.Sc. will have to appear for JEE Mains and JEE Advanced after which the counselling process commences.
Candidates who wish to pursue B. tech will have to appear for UCEED conducted by IIT Bombay. After the results are released, a cut-off will be announced after which the institute will begin the personal interview process.
Candidates who wish to pursue B.Arch. will have to appear for JEE Mains (Paper-2). Candidates aiming for IIT BHU, IIT Roorkee, or IIT Kharagpur will have to appear for JEE Mains as well as JEE AAT. For Postgraduate Courses
IITs offer various postgraduate degree programs, of which the most pursued is MTech. Candidates who wish to pursue a Master’s degree will have to appear for the GATE examination. The results are released in the form of scores and ranks according to which the admissions and counselling process can be undertaken.
The next course offered by the IITs is an integrated course of M.Sc. and Ph.D. of a duration of 5 years. Candidates who wish to take part in an integrated Ph.D. program will have to appear for JAM. After that, they will have to face an interview process followed by a counselling process.
The other course is M.Arch offered by the IITs. Candidates who wish to apply must take the GATE or CUCET examinations. However, GATE is more widely accepted by universities or institutions across the country.

Candidates who are interested in pursuing doctoral programs at IITs must appear for GATE/UGC-NET//UGC-JRF/CSIR-NET examinations along with graduation and post-graduation degrees in the relevant field.
IIT offers an integrated Ph.D. program of a total duration of 5 years. It is a combination of an M.Sc. of 2 years and a Ph.D. of 3 years. The program is a dual degree program focused on the scientific and technological domains, primarily research.
JEE Mains Paper-2 is taken by candidates applying for B.Arch in IITs, NITs, CFTIS, etc whereas NATA is recognized by other universities including some government and private institutions.
